MICA and MICB are non-classical MHC class I genes that encode stress-induced proteins recognized by immune cells such as NK cells and certain T cells. Unlike classical HLA molecules, MICA/MICB are not involved in antigen presentation but instead act as ligands for the activating receptor NKG2D. Their expression can be triggered by infection, inflammation, or cellular stress, making them important in immune surveillance, transplantation research, and studies on cancer and autoimmune diseases.
