GenDx is hiring:
Internship
About GenDx:
GenDx is a global leader in molecular diagnostic laboratory solutions for transplantation and cancer patients. We combine our cutting-edge software solutions, reagents for DNA/RNA sequencing-based diagnostic strategies with our excellent customer support including a comprehensive education program. Our products are sold all over the world through direct sales and distributors.
GenDx, part of the Eurobio Scientific Group since 2022, is headquartered at Utrecht Science Park in The Netherlands.
With a highly educated and motivated team of over 200 people, we contribute to the quality of life and survival chances of transplant patients. Do you want to be part of an innovative company that offers ample time for development?
Are you ready to turn advanced research into software that can support real-world medical diagnostics?
With an internship in the R&D Software team at GenDx, you will join our software team and work at the intersection of genomics, algorithms, and professional software development.
About the project:
Depending on your academic background, interests and skills, we have several challenging and exciting projects to choose from:
1. KIR data analysis and software development
Contribute to the improvement of KIR data analysis by focusing on one or more of the following topics:
-
- Develop a KIR haplotyping feature in our software.
- Investigate co-amplification and homologous genomic regions to improve sequencing-read assignment.
- Develop methods for KIR copy-number variation analysis.
- Develop or update tools for converting the KIR reference database into a software-compatible library.
2. ABO typing and reference data integration
Support our novel ABO typing workflow by:
-
- Developing analysis methods for our new ABO typing approach.
- Implementing tools to process and format the latest ISBT reference database for use in diagnostic software.
3. NGS-Capto-HLA algorithm development
Improve read-assignment algorithms for NGS-Capto-HLA using long-read sequencing data from PacBio or Oxford Nanopore platforms.
4. Software architecture and engineering
For those interested in pure software engineering, investigate how a growing multi-product diagnostic application can be redesigned into a scalable modular architecture. You will explore component boundaries, dependency management, testability, maintainability, and independent feature development, and translate your findings into a practical architectural proposal and working prototype.
Whichever direction you choose, the internship will be structured around a clear research question and result in a substantial thesis with both academic depth and practical impact. You will analyze real sequencing data, investigate the limitations of current approaches, turn your findings into algorithmic solutions, and develop and test prototypes in our C#-based software. This is a hands-on opportunity to combine bioinformatics and/or programming skills while contributing to technology with direct relevance to transplantation and medical diagnostics.
Requirements:
- Duration: 6–9 months
- Location: Utrecht
- Preferred start date: September 2026
- Background: A relevant study in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, life sciences, or a related field
- Interests: Strong interest in bioinformatics, genomic data analysis, and software development
- Programming: Programming experience is required; knowledge of C# is a strong advantage
- Profile: Analytical, curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team
